About Frenchtown, NJ

Frenchtown was first settled in 1757, but it wasn’t until the 1790s that it got its name. Thomas Lowery, a land speculator from nearby Flemington, sold the tract to Paul Henri Mallet-Prevost, a French-speaking Swiss immigrant fleeing the French Revolution. He and many other early settlers spoke French, leading people to call the community “Frenchtown.”
