With fall in the air and days filled with yard work and planting, the fireplace is more inviting than ever. Fatwood is actually the stump of pine trees that have been harvested for another purpose. Naturally high in resin and with no added chemicals it makes an excellent fire starter. Two or three pieces of fatwood are enough to light a wood fire. Fatwood can also be used to start a charcoal fire or barbeque. Our first nor’ easterner came in September. Hopefully that is not a harbinger of the winter to come. In any case, it is better to be prepared for ice then to be caught off guard. Salt is the most economical product for melting ice and provides traction underfoot. Calcium Chloride is less harmful to masonry and melts at colder temperatures. If you choose calcium chloride, consider also using sand for traction. Bird watching brings a bit of the outdoors inside for the winter. There are only two types of birdfeeders--sunflower-mixed seed and thistle-finch food. There only three ways to present the feeder--hanging, mounted on a pole or window mounted. After determining which type of feeder will best suit your needs, and how to present the feeder, the rest is largely a matter of personal preference. Window feeders bring the birds up close for an eye to eye look. Keep in mind however; this may lead to an extra house cleaning chore. Our last and far from least winter preparation is getting ready for Christmas. Shop early this year. With thanksgiving coming late this year, time will fly bye. A tree stand sturdy and heavy enough to hold the tree is invaluable. We will have several to choose from. Most Christmas light strings have a fuse in the plug. Stringing too many together will cause the fuse to melt. Avoid this by using more extension cords and outlets. Timers are the most efficient way to enjoy your lighting efforts and save electricity. There are indoor and outdoor models. Be sure to read the packaging and ask questions. Most importantly, be sure to allow time to enjoy hot cider, hot chocolate and goodies with us when you come in to select your Christmas tree and decorations.
See you soon,
