NURSERY STOCK There are so many places that now sell nursery stock. Did you realize there is actually a difference in the quality? Do you want to buy plants that you don't know what part of the United States they are coming from? Yes, they are inexpensive but are they hardy in our zone? Take for instance a Hino Crimson Azalea can be grown fast in the deep south and planted in our zone. What happens to the plant is the leaf cells are much larger. Therefore, when it comes north it has a much harder time trying to grow and adapt. As a long-time independent garden center, we have had the pleasure of dealing with growers for many years. We expect as well as they do for us to carry quality nursery stock. We are dealing with nurseries who understand that nursery stock have a shelf life, and nursery stock should be shipped before its shelf life in a pot is up. There is also great importance in developing the root and the tap growth together to make it a stronger, healthier plant. There is a term called "double stocking" which means that two plants are put together to make the product look larger than it actually is on the outside, but the roots will compete for the same area and generally one will lose. If you would like to check out one of the quality growers we are using, you can locate them at www.pennsylvaniapride.com. At Mendham Garden Center we prefer to deal with growers in P.A. and N.J. Their quality has been proven to hold up best in our area when grown close to or in our climate zone. Along with the quality nursery stock we sell, we can help you design your gardens. We carry a large assortment of shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals. (Proven Winners is another brand name for annuals at www.provenwinners.com.) We have a large selection of deer-resistant plants, and for those not so deer resistant we carry some great deer deterrent products. So come in and visit our nurseries and find the "Pennsylvania Pride" grower stock which comes with a 3-year guarantee from the grower (see store for details). With these plants you will also be able to recycle the maroon pots they come in. Just bring them back to our yard. Our staff is willing to help you design, select and recommend good planting practices. Happy Planting!
